The world we live in has plethora of choices. We make the choice of food, clothing and shelter; the choice of government, education and that of employment. But what which lies beneath the capability of choice is freedom. Freedom is as innate to us as is breathing. We do not realise its existence unless it is denied to us. Indians realised this pain on being subjected to the British rule for what seemed like an unending period. After the numerous mutinies, where countless martyrs laid their lives and turned the country’s soil red, and after innumerous non-violent protests by thousands of Indians did we get our long lost freedom. This is the need for freedom that however high be the cost of attaining it, we still do not choose otherwise.
But as we know that in today’s world, all the countries are free. Colonisation has, since long, become history. Then what is the relevance of talking about choice of independence? The significance lies in the fact that the countries of the world are still not free. They are not free from the barriers existent due to political borders of the nations, economic differences between them, and social divide among them. Countries have to face restrictions when they want to trade with other nations. People have to face immigration rules when they want to move to another country. The currencies of various economies have to be exchanged. The economies are not free at a global level. What I am trying to hint towards is the establishment of the ‘World Economy’ where there is a single currency, a single monetary system and a unified political system.
The establishment of such an economy needs a constant struggle by all the favouring nations to persuade the rest of them. We can see that this path is already being treaded upon. The Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) between nations, the establishment of World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the existence and functioning of United Nations, since long, re-establish the fact that most of the countries favour the movement towards a world economy without barriers. Such an economy will endow upon the human race ultimate freedom beyond any barriers. It will cater to every human’s need to be free!
